Knowing Your Good Fats and Bad Fats: Part 1

It's a common mistake that many make when trying to eat healthy- they cut out fat completely. No more butter, no more eggs, no more dairy. All fats must be removed, and then you'll lose the fat that you have on your body, right? But what about good fats?

The Good Fats:

  • Monounsaturated fats can be found in a variety of different plant products, including seeds and oils. Researchers believe that monounsaturated fats help us to burn more energy, and thus, slim down and stay active. Some of the tastier sources of monounsaturated fats include olives (and their oil), avocados, and peanuts. From guacamole to satay and pad thai, as long as you cut down on the sugar content, there are a lot of healthy dish concepts within the monounsaturated family.
  • Polyunsaturated fats can lower your LDL cholesterol, and raise your HDL in turn. That's a lowering of the bad kind, and a raising of the good. Sources of polyunsaturated fat include fish that are high in fat content, like salmon, almond butter, and seeds such as flax and sesame. Again, a great combination with monounsaturated fat dishes.
  • Omega-3 fatty acids can help to build cell membranes, reduce inflammation, and even give you a reduced chance of certain cardiovascular diseases. You can find omega 3s in fish, wild rice, walnuts, pumpkins, and canola oil. Note that the trend of incorporating Omega 3s into more commonly eaten foods has also meant a rise in grass-fed, omega-3 rich meat options, and even omega-3 enhanced eggs. They aren't much more expensive than the common variety, and eggs are already a very clean, very rich source of protein.

As you can see, there are plenty of different food sources that contain heart healthy fat, many of which are recommended for strength training. Avocados, peanut butter, eggs, fish, and foods like seaweed can all make for some tasty dish ideas, all while supporting your greater overall health. Many of these good fats are rich in other important components as well, from zinc, to iron, to tryptophan, which can all work to boost hormonal balance.
