5 of the Healthiest Superfoods on the Planet

Superfoods In order for us to lead long and healthy lives, we need to ensure that we start with the basic core principles of healthy living, which are diet (Superfoods) and exercise. While it’s very important that we ensure we exercise and get plenty of physical activity, we also must ensure that we eat right and fill our bodies full of nutrients. Remember, healthy eating is about so much more than just losing body fat. Healthy eating is about improving your health and prolonging your life. But which foods should we be eating? Well, here are 5 of the healthiest superfoods on the planet. Lemons – For many, lemons are used for nothing more than a garnish, or perhaps a background flavour for your favourite foods and drinks. The truth of the matter however, is that lemons are actually healthier than many other fruits, and we aren’t getting enough. One lemon will provide you with more than 100% of your minimum daily intake for vitamin C. Vitamin C boosts immunity and therefore helps you to fight off, and prevent, illness and disease. The citrus flavonoids found in lemons also act as powerful antioxidants that can inhibit the growth of cancerous cells. Avocado – Avocado fruit, and yes, avocado is a fruit, is another hugely healthy superfood that people are finally falling in love with. Avocado is packed full of healthy fats, minerals, and antioxidants. Because of this, avocados have been found to boost cardiovascular health, as well as brain health and function. They are incredibly nutrient-dense as one avocado provides around 20 nutrients required by the body, including fat soluble vitamins and minerals. Kale – Kale was the healthy superfood of choice a few years back, but now people seem to have forgotten it again for some bizarre reason. Kale is a green leafy vegetable that is packed full of vitamins: A, C, and K, as well as minerals like iron, zinc, and potassium. It also provides powerful B vitamins for healthy metabolic function. Kale is one of the most powerful foods available in the fight against cancer and other serious illnesses and diseases for that matter. Kale contains potent glucosinolates which help to provide protection for our DNA. Organic eggs – If you can, always go with organic eggs as opposed to eggs from caged hens. Organic eggs are a great source of protein, which is vital for cellular and muscular health and function. Your immune system also requires protein, so the more protein you can consume, the better (within reason). Eggs are rich in amino acids, and in fact, they are the only food to provide a complete essential and non-essential amino acid profile. The yolk is also packed full of healthy fats that are great for your brain and cardiovascular system. The yolks from healthy and happy hens should be bright yellow, even orange in color. If they are dull, the eggs lack nutrients and taste, and are good for pretty much nothing at all. Organic coconut oil – Coconut oil is one of the healthiest fats we could ever wish for. Made up of 99% saturated fats, these fats are incredibly healthy MCTs (Medium Chain Triglycerides). These fats when consumed can be digested and absorbed much easier than other fats, so the body uses them like carbohydrates, meaning they are instantly used for energy, instead of being stored as body fat. The oil is also packed full of lauric acid which provides countless health benefits. The healthy fats also have been found to help provide protection against dementia and certain forms of cancer.
